Discover More About Buxton in 2023

As we enter a New Year, many of us make resolutions: some we keep, but many get broken. I am firmly of the opinion that having some idea of the discoveries still to be had and enjoyed helps considerably in keeping us optimistic.

So I would like to share some of the things that Discover Buxton has in store this coming year.

A Taste of Buxton | Walking Tours

This great combination of a gentle walking tour with lots of local foodie treats is a real winter winner. The pace is slower and local venues are not as crowded at this time of year, so let us create something totally bespoke for you and your party. For more information and our recent reviews, see the tour page here.

Our usual history and heritage town walking tours are also still available throughout the year including our natural history explorer tour. Stretch your legs and bring the colour back to your cheeks! Forget grey, welcome bright red!!

Time to Celebrate

This year sees many important historical anniversaries in the town such as the 450th anniversary of Mary Queen of Scots’ first visit to the town. We hope to be presenting a series of talks and tours to celebrate this event in June.

It’s also the architect of the Crescent, John Carr’s 300th birthday in April and we will be telling his story in more detail in the wonderful surroundings of the Assembly Rooms during upcoming open access dates (see below). Our storytelling sessions will take place at 11am and 2pm. Booking will be necessary; we’ll let you know how to do so nearer the time.

Upcoming Crescent Assembly Rooms Access Dates
  • February: Wednesday 22nd
  • March: Wednesday 22nd, Thursday 23rd, Friday 24th
  • April: Tuesday 11th

All at 10.30am to 4pm

Trinity Church has a 150th anniversary next year. We will include Trinity in one of our themed tours, Church Matters, which celebrates the spiritual life of the town.

And it is also Buxton Opera House’s 120th on 1st June 2023. Apart from their gala with Russell Watson, we hope to offer our Frank Matcham tours once again.

Festival Frolics

During the summer, we will be offering our popular Festival Walks plus six opportunities to see our Vera Brittain performance at the Devonshire Dome during the Buxton International Festival. In fact, Vera Brittain fans will be spoilt this year with a brand new opera being performed, The Land That Might Have Been, which is inspired by her life. There will also be a new walk entitled Spa and Empire that we will offer alongside our Buxton: a Safe Haven tour. This looks particularly at the story of our Jewish refugees who found safety here during WWII – find out more here.

We hope to enlighten you with a new offering during Buxton Festival Fringe too and last, but by no means least, our beloved tram will be out and about again from Easter. So what are you waiting for? Get in touch and let us help you discover Buxton.

We hope to see you soon,
