It is suitable for family groups and children over 8, however this is a trail for everyone to enjoy, so will take team effort to complete.
We don’t want to give too much away but you will be walking for no more than about a mile so most of the trail is through the historic heart of the town and on easy paths to access and manouvre. You are seeking the magical realm of the Goddess and she will not disclose her secrets without effort so are you ready to accept the challenge?
Prior to the arrival of the Romans in the 1st century, this area of Derbyshire was populated by tribes of Iron Age people. These people worshipped many gods and goddesses. Here in Buxton, in a hollow in the hills, was a very special place: the meeting of two rivers and at least nine springs. Many thanks would have been given to the goddess of these sacred springs – Arnemetia – for providing these special waters. Her name contains the Celtic words are meaning ‘against or beside’ and nemeton, meaning ‘sacred grove’.
This is a self-guided trail, with a printed booklet containing family friendly challenges to be completed whilst on the trail.
Booklets can be purchased from Scrivener’s Bookshop in Higher Buxton or The Pump Room, opposite the Crescent.
When doing the trail, bring a pencil and write the answers in your booklet as you go. When you have found answers to all the challenges, you can submit your responses on our website (the special link is in the booklet) in order to receive your reward.
