Natural History Explorer Tour

The Tour

Learn about Peakland geology and what shapes the landscape today, hear the story of Buxton Water and discover the industrial heritage of the area. And hunt for fossils – we know all the good spots!

The Explorer tour takes you up into the hills around Buxton and to the local tourist spots of Solomon’s Temple and Corbar Cross, through picturesque woodlands and down into the Wye River valley. A great option for new visitors who want help navigating Buxton’s green spaces or those interested in natural history.

The tour lasts at least 4 hours with a refreshment break and longer at a slower walking pace, and so is not for the feint hearted – some parts of the route are steep and after rain become muddy. Sensible shoes are therefore required and at least a litre of water and a raincoat are recommended.

The suggested summer season start time is 1pm and 10am if during the winter months.

We have an accessible version of this tour which lasts ~1.5 hours and utilises the Pavilion Gardens to tell the story of Peakland geology.
