Robert Rippon Duke: Victorian Architect

The Tour

Learn about Victorian Buxton as told by Robert Rippon Duke, the architect responsible for many of Buxton’s iconic buildings. In full period dress his story begins outside the majestic Opera House.

Robert Rippon Duke was the architectural advisor to the Duke of Devonshire as well as the foremost builder and architect of Victorian Buxton. Visitors to Buxton and even resident Buxtonians seem largely unaware of Mr Duke’s role in transforming Buxton from a village into a buzzing, fashionable Victorian spa town.

Join Mr Duke on the Pavilion Gardens promenade to first visit the Octagon Concert Hall, built in 1875. We then proceed through the town via The Crescent to the oft-overlooked buildings behind The Grove Hotel, finishing at his masterpiece the Devonshire Dome, now part of the University of Derby.
