Anna Seward: a woman of enlightenment

The Tour

Anna Seward first came to Buxton in 1793 to take what was known as the 'Buxton cure'. She suffered from rheumatism and the waters of the town were believed to have health-giving properties. On these occasions, she stayed at the newly built Crescent and spent her time in between water treatments taking daily constitutionals and chatting with her fellow guests. Anna, in full Georgian costume, shares with you her insights into the behaviours of a fascinating period of spa history.

Join Miss Seward on the Pavilion Gardens promenade and stroll with her through the gardens beside the sweet smelling Wye before walking past the newly opened Crescent to hear more of the building’s history. A visit to St Anne’s Well follows to sample Buxton Water fresh from the spring before Miss Seward bids you farewell and good health.
