Tram LEGO Competition Winners Announced

To kick off the 2022 season, earlier in the year, we embarked on a LEGO building competition in partnership with educational activity café, Brick Corner. The task was to build a model of the ‘Wonder of the Peak’ tram with the winner invited to take a free, private tour on the tram for up to 8 people.

LEGO enthusiasts of all ages (3 to 64) from around the country (mostly Buxton) took part and a wonderful 27 entries were submitted. Following the entry deadline on 20 March, our team along with those at Brick Corner set about trying to choose a winner.

It has been a very difficult decision as all the entries had merit. It was also difficult to apply a full marking criteria, especially as two of the judging panel are ex-teachers and there were far too many variables.

Andrew, aged 52
Emily, aged 8
George, aged 10
The Hobley Family
Phoenix, aged 8
Loewy, aged 3
Martha, aged 8½
Samuel, aged 5
Ivy, aged 8
Seb, aged 19

The Shortlisted Entries

After considering accuracy, imagination and character, and taking into account public votes on Facebook, a shortlist of 10 potential winners (pictured above) were invited to Brick Corner on Saturday morning (pictured below).

At just 3 years old, the youngest shortlisted entrant, Loewy, made the list because of the ambitious, aspirational, futuristic feel of his ‘plane tram’ which was felt to capture something of its adventurous nature. At the other end of the of the age range, was Andrew, aged 52, who created an incredibly cute micro-tram.

Some, such as the Hobley family from London and George, aged 10, went for accuracy; others were more interpretive. The entry by Seb, aged 19, from café neighbour Bright Opportunities, became referred to as the ‘royal tram’. His carriage-style entry showed some close observation albeit in a different way and showed us what the tram might look like in another life. Another such entry was by Phoenix, aged 8, who created what felt like a super-charged, enhanced tram, one that is appropriately able to aid the on-board Marvel superheroes in their world-saving efforts. The ‘extra’ nature of this entry, and its popularity on Facebook, made for serious consideration for the top spot.

Samuel, aged 5, was also a popular entry on Facebook, which secured him a shortlisted spot. Made from memory, whilst not the conventional red colour, it is recognisable as the tram and unique in its appearance.

Ivy, aged 8, created a whole tram scene complete with queue, Netta in the booking office and sign. Such imagination, again, had to be rewarded. Another young lady going the extra mile, was Martha, aged 8½, who not only made a tram, but also a DB Brolly Buggy. The often forgotten, annoyed and enraged Brolly, with this extra-special recognition, was extremely pleased and can be seen having a hug with Martha at the prize-giving (pictured below).

The Winner

But, in the end, the overall winner was chosen to be Emily, aged 8 (pictured below). Her creation was thought to capture the character of the tram and was the only one to feature on all the judge’s shortlists.

A huge congratulations to Emma who wins a free tour on the tram for up to eight people.

We would like to thank all those who took the time to take part in this competition. Seeing them all come in was overwhelming and it has honestly been very difficult to pick just one winner.

With that in mind, we decided to award all shortlisted entries two free tickets for a tour on the tram this April.
