Things are very different for this year’s events and many of our events are on line so we thought you might enjoy the film we recorded under the Old Hall hotel in 2016 The film records a part of Buxton’s heritage that has already vanished, as from 1 October 2020 the space hosts treatment rooms, for the newly refurbished Crescent Hotel and Spa
In the recent past the space under the Old hall was used in a variety of different ways. There was the Paupers Pit, Barrel room and The Orchestra Pit hosting live music theatre and many parties! There was a bar and a small dance floor with the all important disco ball on the ceiling. It also played host to Underground Venues every year during the Buxton Fringe. When we recorded we wanted to show what it looked like then but we also wanted to record the route Mary Queen of Scots would have taken to get to the Baths when she stayed here in 1573 . It seemed appropriate therefore to get a little theatrical and have the Queen appear and say a few words. What we hadn’t reckoned on was the extraneous noises we picked up when recording and despite our best efforts could not be removed .
It would appear that Mary ‘s voice refused to be silenced. You can make your mind up here.
We also invite you to listen in to our podcasts which record much of the history and heritage of the town and were generously sponsored by Tarmac. There are 26 in all so we are sure you will find something to interest and engage .
There are some other events in the town too and you can see what others are offering here.
If you are visiting the town during this period we are also delighted to say that our guided tours of the town will one again be available from 12 September, after being closed from March, and you can book a tour on our brand new website www.discoverbuxton.co.uk
Enjoy!
