Buxton Calling #22 | December 2017
Buxton During WWI - Canadian Connections
In November 1917, when The Granville Canadian Red Cross Special Hospital was moved from its vulnerable and embattled home in Ramsgate to the safer centre of the country, hundreds of wounded Canadian soldiers arrived at our railway station to face their first Buxton Christmas.
Our podcast this month remembers and celebrates these soldiers.
We speak to Dave Carlyle from Friends of Buxton Station about the role our station played during the Great War and the work his team have done to commemorate it.
There would be no Christine Lomas without the visit of one of these Canadian Soldiers to Buxton during the war. She tells us how researching her family history opened up new chapters in her story as the trans-Atlantic connection continues.
The museum is always a great place to start in any venture and Netta and I were lucky to be allowed to tinker with some inspiring new history tech there in the company of our friend Joe Perry one of the museums curators. The ‘Collections in the Landscape’ project and ‘Pocket Wonders’ web app changing the way we package the past.
…and Canadian poet and former Buxton resident Paula Bowman lists what she misses about the town.
